We stand against a toxic publishing practices
We stand against a toxic publishing community
The project arises from an unfortunate situation in which today’s academic world finds itself, where a Professor or Researcher sees their academic work published often on the basis of the work’s ability to arouse interest and generate profits for the publishing house, and not based on the quality and merit of what the book or research actually proposes.
On the other hand, those who manage to publish their own book must then decide whether to publish it Open Access or for a fee, thus choosing between free knowledge or the economic capacity of the author, where however the latter choice becomes heavy and burdensome, considering that publishing an Open Access book today can cost up to 17/20,000 dollars, excessive costs for any Author and which lead many to choose a restricted publication.
In this particularly difficult situation regarding the authority and morality of the academic environment, as repeatedly denounced by Retraction Watch, it is our objective to reform it for the good of all, present and future. Like a farmer plowing his land, who besides us academics can bring order to the academy?
Following these increasingly insistent ideas and needs of academic publishing, we decided to launch the “Durham & Thunmann” project. Being a non-profit project, with Durham & Thunmann press authors will be able to publish their books for free while readers will have free and open access to D&T’s books and all content. Furthermore, and most importantly, the project will be independent and self-funded, guaranteeing the impartiality and integrity of its success, so as to prevent political or other positions from influencing what should be an environment of impartiality.
If you believe this too, well, welcome to Durham & Thunmann! So… Let’s bring some order to the “library”.
